RTI activist Akhil Gogoi arrested in Guwahati

Guwahati: Police on Friday arrested RTI activist and leader of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) Akhil Gogoi from the Guwahati Press Club in connection with the Dispur clash that left three killed and over 30 injured. He has been charged with 10 cases of rioting, arsoning, damaging public property and illegal meeting.

The Assam government is also considering slapping NSA against him. A protest rally led by Akhil Gogoi in Dispur turned violent on Wednesday, during which at least three people, including a nine-year-old child, died in police action.

The incident happened in Dispur near the state secretariat when activist Akhil Gogoi was leading a protest against the eviction drive by the Assam government.

The police had to resort to tear-gas shells to disperse the crowd. Five journalists, among others were injured in the clashes.

Thousands joined Akhil Gogoi in his protest against the eviction drive by the Assam government, following which the police first fired in air to disperse the crowd and then fired into the crowd.
The police, however, are in denial of having fired in the crowd.
